Cheap masonry quotes almost always cut corners — wrong mortar mix, shallow joint removal, no color matching, or unlicensed labor. Bad tuckpointing can fail in 1–3 years, while properly done work lasts 25–50 years. We quote what it actually costs to do the job right.

What is tuckpointing?

Tuckpointing is the process of removing deteriorated mortar from between bricks and replacing it with fresh, color-matched mortar. It restores both the structural integrity and the original appearance of brickwork — and stops water from getting into your walls and chimney.

How long does tuckpointing last?

Properly performed tuckpointing using high-quality mortar lasts 25–50 years. Cheap repointing using the wrong mortar mix can fail in just a few years, which is why technique and materials matter.

Can you match my existing mortar color?

Yes. We custom-blend mortar on-site to match the color and texture of your original joints. We also match the joint profile (concave, V-joint, struck, etc.) so repaired areas blend seamlessly.

Tuckpointing vs. repointing — what's the difference?

In modern usage, both terms refer to removing damaged mortar and replacing it with fresh mortar. Karbella performs full repointing to industry standards: ¾-inch removal depth, proper mortar mix, and tooled joints.

How do I know if I need tuckpointing?

Common signs include cracked or crumbling mortar, gaps you can stick a screwdriver into, white efflorescence on brick faces, moisture stains on interior walls near brick, and loose bricks — especially on chimneys.

How long does a chimney rebuild take?

A typical above-roof rebuild takes 2–4 days. Full rebuilds from the firebox up can take 5–10 days depending on size, weather, and access. We always give you a clear timeline before starting work.

Do I need a full rebuild or just repair?

Not always. Many chimneys only need crown repair, partial rebuild of the top few courses, and tuckpointing. We inspect honestly and recommend the smallest job that will actually solve the problem — often saving thousands compared to a full rebuild.

My chimney is leaking — what's wrong?

Chimney leaks usually come from one of four places: a cracked crown, failed flashing, deteriorated mortar joints, or a missing/damaged chimney cap. We diagnose the actual source rather than just throwing sealant at it.

Will you match the original brick on a rebuild?

Whenever possible, yes. We salvage and reuse original brick on partial rebuilds, and source matching brick for full rebuilds. The goal is for the chimney to look like it has always been there.

Clay brick, concrete pavers, natural stone (bluestone, travertine, flagstone), and stamped concrete. We help you choose the material based on style, budget, and how the space will be used.

A properly installed paver patio with the right base prep will last 25+ years through Ohio freeze-thaw cycles. The pavers themselves can last 50+ years; only re-leveling or polymeric sand top-up is needed periodically.

Concrete cracks because of poor base prep, no control joints, or freeze-thaw on a slab without proper drainage. We prevent that with compacted aggregate bases, steel reinforcement, and properly spaced control joints so your new driveway stays flat and solid for decades.

Spring through fall is ideal — mortar needs temperatures above 40°F to cure properly. We schedule projects across NE Ohio from April through November, and book up fast in summer.
